‘The Turkish Academy of Sciences’ carries out worthwhile projects in terms of science education

Nihat Ergün, the Minister of Science, Industry and Technology has stated that science and education are two strategically important subjects that determines development levels and competitive power of the countries. Because of this fact, the ministry has new attempts in areas of education, science and technology. For instance; the share of R&D expenditures in national income has increased three times nearly and seven times nominally. The number and efficiency of techno parks founded in universities has increased seriously as well. Whereas there were only two techno parks in 2002 in our country, today the number has reached fifty techno parks and thirty five of them are active. Turkey’s target of being in first ten of the biggest economies in the world depends on its success in areas of science, technology and innovation. In this regard, the efficient coordination of all relevant institutions has been significantly important, particularly the institutions as ‘The Turkish Academy of Sciences’, ‘Council of Higher Education’ and ‘The Scientific and Technologic Research Council of Turkey’.

The Turkish Academy of Sciences Aims to Make its Science Education Function More Effective by Creating More Projects and developing the Current Ones

The Importance of Science Education

Social changes in the domains of politics, economics and science have been existing rapidly in our day. Correspondingly, societies have to adjust this change, which is a requirement of science and technology era, in order to realize sustainable development. For this reason, right along with individuals forming society, it has been considerably important for future generations to have the capacity and perceptive faculty in understanding, commenting and inferring the environment, scientific and technological events and to achieve scientific viewpoint.

For this purpose, ‘The Turkish Academy of Sciences’ have been carrying on projects that support ‘science education’ and plans to keep the project development. In this context, ‘Science Education Project’ aiming to endear science to children by examination based education; ‘Children Platform Project’ aiming to raise the level of children’s technology use via internet; ‘Turkish World’s Heritage to Humanity:100 Chief Work of Art and Children Versions Project’ aiming to reveal scientific and cultural developments in our history and to increase awareness about it and ‘Turkish Scientific Terms Dictionary Project’ have been leading projects of The Turkish Academy of Sciences that support science education.

Turkish as Science Language and Consciousness of Turkish Language

Before questioning whether Turkish is a science language or not, we have to question our trust, faith and sensitivity in our native language and to check out whether we fulfil our responsibilities or not. Certainly, lack of consciousness in society about Turkish language has been the greatest handicap in both development of Turkish and becoming of it as a science language. We can focus on two areas in terms of analyzing Turkish as a science language. First of all we have to create the necessary infrastructure for Turkish to become a science language. Secondly we have to fulfil our responsibilities in daily use of Turkish by using it correctly and appropriately.

Preparing Turkish dictionaries in areas of engineering, medicine, natural and social sciences in a broad scope and putting to use on Internet would provide a good infrastructure for the language. We have to take into account both the long time requirement for preparing an extensive dictionary and the need for revising the words consistently. Furthermore, we should use Turkish delicately. Writing and speaking Turkish in an excellent way is not a handicap in learning and using foreign languages in global world.

Turkish World’s Heritage to Humanity:100 Chief Work of Art and Children Versions Project

The old work of arts of Turkish scientists have been among important cultural heritages of our country and Turkish-Islamic science, culture and history of art. The Turkish Academy of Sciences, as a scientific institute, has liability in terms of introducing science and increasing the level of societal interest to science. In this direction, with the aim of presentation of these work of arts, which have been important cultural heritages and reference books written by Turkish intellectuals in history, and with the aim of providing society to draw benefit from these important works in daily life, The Turkish Academy of Sciences have started ‘Turkish World’s Heritage to Humanity:100 Chief Work of Art Project’.

During the selection of 100 main work of arts in the scope of the project, works have been chosen with special care. The project aims to introduce these 100 chief works to our literature and to save them from their idle position in libraries.
